Inductive loads are applied to an electrical supply by electrical equipment on LV electricity supplies in all types of manufacturing, industrial and commercial processes. This load generates the reactive power of an electrical system. The larger the reactive component of the power used in a power supply, the lower the power factor will be. A low power factor increases all the electrical values based around current, increasing losses, heat in the system and electricity costs. In extreme cases a provider may add 'reactive charges' to an electricity bill. The electrical engineering solution to reduce the reactive power is power factor correction equipment.
PFC equipment is used to counter inductive loads and is applied to an LV electrical supply to react to inductive loads with capacitance. The capacitance, applied correctly to the circuit almost completely eliminates the reactive power, reducing the current, maximum demand and KW usage of the supply.
